OSMesa can be installed, but it's not trivial.
I found it easier to install it locally not to
Mesa'p the system OpenGL.

Here it's running off of SourceForge Linux server:

To make use of harware-accelerated OpenGL, consider
  http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/System/Beta/Java_Hardware_OpenGL

This is a little outdated (j601 beta).
