In the new style, I think at least the known extension types can be stripped off for display. Eg, I have a symbolic links "Alex's Music" and "Phil's Music", which actually appear as "Alex's Music.lnk" and "Phil's Music.lnk" (shortcuts in Windows).
Do you know whether perl treats shortcuts on Windows like symlinks on linux/unix? I opened a bug with a possible fix earlier today:
