The SB3 is absolutely IDENTICAL to the SB3 in every way that matters to slimserver. The "Squeezebox v3" report is simply tweaked by matching a set of MAC addresses to those known to be the SB3 production.
FW28 is fine for many users. If you are experiencing wireless issues, you may want to upgrade. You may want to upgrade just to make sure there haven't been any new wireless issues, or even if you just want to nifty new version of the analog VU meters for the visualiser.
