No, it's a good thing. Because slimserver and squeezebox work together as a single system, slimproto can improve and evolove over time without having to worry about backward compatibility between various versions of each subsystem.

Sure, we could make them independent, but that would likely make them less reliable and slow down development.

Of course, if you are so inclined, you can mix and match to your heart's content, but that's not an officially supported configuration and you are on your own.
