I'm a couple days behind you on updates, but at present scanning is broken on debian. See bug 3560.
Try this: su -s /bin/sh slimserver /usr/sbin/slimserver-scanner --prefsfile /etc/slimserver/slimserver.pref /path/to/music Maybe add a --wipe there if you have an empty library anyway. That works for me.
