After some more research, I've tracked down the Debian bug that describes what's going on here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=384741. It's fixed in 5.0.24-2, but it seems that currently only 5.0.24-1 is available in testing. I don't know what the process for packages going from unstable to testing is, so don't know how long this will take. In the meantime, downgrading to the previous version of the package will probably fix things. I don't know the apt syntax for this off the top of my head, and that's assuming that he old version is still in the apt-cache anyway. Failing that, http://snapshot.debian.net/ is probably the best way to get the old package.
I'm posting this stuff here in the hope that it's of use to someone else. I tried searching for the original discussion on these forums but couldn't work out how to search for "transactions not supported" without vbulletin turning the query into "transactions -supported". How do you escape keywords??? Max PS Just to beat Robin to it: yes, I could use gmane instead. ;-) max.spicer;132998 Wrote: > Answering some of my own questions: > http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=120643#poststop deals > with the issue of external dependencies.
