Wow, it was the ARTISTSORT tag! One song from one album with that tag was able to throw off all listings for that artist. Thanks everyone, I would have never found that as a possible problem.
I'm not sure how it got into a few of my tags, perhaps from CDDB lookups, but now I just run a PERL script to scan and strip ARTISTSORT before I perform a SC7 music rescan.
