Have you got what you need from 'post 14' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=354822&postcount=14)? The main points are the use of the transcoder argument to the protocol-handler's new method, plus the canHandleTranscode($self, $song) method. The convert.conf capabilities syntax is documented in the file.
