"watch the album art get rendered album by album" <- This has absolutely nothing to do with SQLite. Artwork resizing is a dog and there isn't much we can do about it. Don't disable pre-caching and if it's still slow you can use the lower quality resizing option. I am planning on improving the way artwork resizing works for 7.4 so it won't bog the server down.
