That is right - for licensing reasons there is no WMA decoder built into the desktop Squeezeplay.
If your SBS is on Windows - SBS should handle transcoding. If your SBS is on Linux or OSX - you can make SBS transcoding by installing mplayer and the playWMA plugin.
