Apologies for asking such a basic question. Obtained a 7.6 checkout and
have it in a separate directory, not quite sure of the next steps. I
want to install the server on a (spare) machine running Debian Lenny (I
already have an older SBS running nicely on another Debian box which
I'll keep in place for now).

Am I right in thinking that the 'buildme' script in the server folder
does 'not' actually install the SBS, but instead creates a 'package'
which can, then, be installed?

If so, and after reading various earlier threads about all the
different directories needed, etc, I'm tending towards asking the
script to build me a 'deb' package. Would the 'deb' automatically
create all the directories, and the special 'user'(s) etc? (The deb I
installed for the released version I used seemed to have done
everything itself, for me.)

If I've understood correctly, so far, then the directories that the
'buildme' script wants are mostly to do with creating the deb, viz:

- a working directory for it to build in (I'll make a "buildtemp" for
it under my home)

- explicit reference to the directory where the things it should build
can be found - can that be the full path of 'just' the 'server'
directory?

- definition of where the 'deb' should ultimately put the server when
the 'deb' is dpkg'd after being built. Perhaps I should not ask it to
install under my 'home' because it uses a different user, doesn't it?
I noticed that Mattias Holmlund - who has some Debian start scripts -
thought /opt/somewhere might be ok.

The wiki does mention, under Free BSD, not installing an RPM but
instead just running slimserver.pl. Presumably I cannot just do that
with my 'checkout' file structure? I have to make a package, don't I?

Apologies for asking such basic things, grateful for any
clarification,

regards

Atlantic
