Michael, it's very likely the same problem described in 'Bug 9704' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9704). Like the server restart, it's been a good old friend of mine for months if not years, I've seen it on both MacOS and Linux. And yes, the scan terminates successfully when it happens.
