Requiring explicit ALBUMARTIST tagging from which to form the album artist list.
That was a bug. Should be fixed now (hopefully...). As discussed earlier in the thread the new AA list mostly is the old Artists list with all the additional roles disabled (which was default): AA, and Artists which are the only artist on any album.
But maybe it's not as simple as this, and I still haven't fully understood what I'm after...

It indeed is. What was wrong in that statement is the lack of filter for compilations, which caused the "too many artists" issue you reported.
