INTRODUCTION 

Performance assessment exercise can be stressful, painful burden or meaningless 
ritual or a very delightful, transformational experience. It depends upon the 
following factors

 

Ø  Ability to distinguish between performer and performance

Ø  Ability to distinguish between personal attributes and acquired competencies

Ø  Ability to distinguish between facts, estimates, opinions, ideas, bias and 
prejudice

Ø  Ability to identify knowledge gaps, lack of skills, wrong attitude, 
unproductive / counterproductive and inappropriate habits and degree of 
involvement

Ø  Ability to distinguish between lead measures and lag measures

Ø  Ability to go beyond and explore potential and possibilities of succession 
planning and career building

 

Actual performance assessment process suffers from following common deficiencies

 

Ø  Ill defined / Incomplete/ Obsolete measures of performance

Ø  Less than 360 degree feedback

Ø  Assumptions made, going wrong

Ø  Incomplete reporting

Ø  Intellectual and emotional bias of the assessor

Ø  Mirror effect and distorted mirror effect caused by differing value systems

Ø  Insufficient preparation and time allotted for assessment

Ø  Interruptions

Ø  Negative / Casual outlook

 

Well conducted performance assessment can help in avoiding unintended 
demoralization, estrangement and attrition; it can reduce the stress level, 
improve productivity and can lead to faster growth and higher profitability.
