I'm really no expert (not even close) of the shading system so I shouldn't probably comment much on this but if we just consider this in its general form...
The changes in the render branch I guess bring tangible advantages. So it's a matter of telling if these overrule the possible bugs introduced. So before building or testing anything, why not simply put up an unofficial poll asking users if they think those features are worth bugs and/or compatibility loss? Just to get a general feeling of how much interest there is.
