Here's a patch (http://www.pasteall.org/19364/diff) that does the rename plus a couple other little things to make a valid and signed package from a 'make package_debian' -- assuming one has their gpg keys set up properly.
I've been using it successfully with those changes and it should also work if someone wanted to upload to a launchpad ppa using 'dput ppa:foo/ppa blender_2.56+svn35006-bf_i386.changes'.
