Hi there,

Recently something changed such that when you add a new material slow to an
object that already has a material, it duplicates the previous material into
the new slot. The previous behavior was to create a new slot that was linked
to the same material. Personally I find this new behavior to be very
frustrating as I am constantly ending up with ten copies of of the same
material that I then need to manually remove by SHIFT + Left Clicking on the
"X" and then reloading the file. When rendering models without textures I
generally use 3-4 materials applied to all objects as a means of visually
separating the surfaces, thus why I am using the same materials over and
over again.

My proposal would be to change this back such that when you add a new
material slot it either adds a new slot and links to the previous material,
OR it adds a new empty slot which would allow you to either choose the old
material or add a new one without ever duplicating anything. If you want to
duplicate a material (such as when you want to use one material as a
starting point for another) then you can just press the "Make Single User"
button.

Thoughts?
