There's a workflow issue with UVs. Only the selected 3D faces are displayed on the UV layout which can be fine sometimes and sometimes can be a problem
A way to solve this is to enable Syncronized selection between UVs and 3D Faces. However you don't always wan't to sinc faces since it comes with a few problems, one of them is that island selection won't work in sync mode.
