I believe the color wheel is a relatively shorter term fix. Of course, there are some legacy code paths that likely would require deeper consideration. The color picker needs would be: A) Use an artist defined transform for transfer / tone curve properties. Following Katana and the like, this accounts for the perceptual selection needs (log or such versus a linearized data model). B) Hook the picker color display into the pipeline to account for different primaries. This permits wide gamut and alternate outputs to properly display sRGB, as well as properly correct sRGB outputs. Currently the picker dumps raw minimum to maximum values, and therefore it always displays the color primaries of whatever the output device is.
