You can play the one side of the game (the original side) without the additional buildings to play the original version of the game. The components are just as nice if not a little nicer (deeper colors). So there's no reason not to pick up the latest version.
The 2nd side gives you an additional option for an extended game. (I haven't played the new side yet) There are four additional gold temples placed on that side. The new buildings can be placed on a line of three of the same color tiles that gives you an extra victory cube when you place a tile of that color on the kingdom that the strip resides. There's also one other "tower" cone building that is placed on the Ziggrats (new tiles) that would replace a cross of the same tiles. I forget the bonus this gets you but I presume it's an extra cube like the others with you place a connecting tile.
