So, the other night I picked up a pair of games from the 50%-off sale
at Barnes and Noble, and one of them was “Dread Pirate”. (I also saw
an expansion for DP, but decided to skip it until I knew more about
the basic game.)

Dread Pirate has tons of cool “fiddly bits”: 100 jewels (actually
glass beads or “dragon’s tears”) in four colors with matching pouches,
a bunch of replica doubloons, four cast metal ships under full sail, a
small deck of cards, some hand-carved wooden dice, plus a fabric map
of the Caribbean (“...but it’s based on a *real* treasure map!”)
[bonus points for anyone who knows the source of the quote], and it
all comes in a hinged wooden box. Pretty sweet for only $25.

Can anyone tell me anything about the game? It’s a lot of fun just
setting out the pieces and getting familiar with the look and feel of
the parts, but is the game any fun to play? (I’ve had evening classes,
so I haven’t had time to read the rules, yet.) I thought it might be
something our family (me; my wife; a girl, 9; a boy, 7) might have fun
with. What do you folks think?

( As a fall-back, the other game I picked up was “Rumis”, for only $5
(!). The kids really like construction-type toys, so I’m pretty sure
this will be a hit. )

Thanks for any info!
