The level of cynicism is appalling.. even before knowing who are contesting the election, people want to exercise the "I vote Nobody" option. More than anything else, it reflects on our sad condition that a nation of 1 billion plus, cannot find 543 good people!

And I am sure this is a great beginning as near 70% educated voter don't vote due to a common reason that they don;t find a suitable party or candidate. this is true too. today votes are casted in the name of caste, religion, cash prizes. Even very grass root level people brain wash uneducated people to cast their vote to certain party or candidate. Election Commission of India introduced an option of "Don't like any candidate? You can still vote" If you want to vote but don't wish to support any candidate of your area, you have a way out. Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, has a provision that offers hope for such voters. As per Rule 49-O, when a valid voter decides not to cast his vote, but decides to record this fact, he or she can go the presiding officer and record this. Such a voter should go to the presiding officer, shall show a proof that he is a valid voter and will be allowed to record his vote. For such voters, the Electronic Voting Machine has to be switched off and the said voter's vote will be recorded as 'nil'. According to sources in the ECI, such votes can be counted as well. Such a voter has to enter this fact in a specially-designed Form-17-A and the voter's signature or thumb impression will be taken. Such voters' finger will be marked by indelible ink as well. But, in 2004, when the ECI had suggested many electoral reforms, there was a suggestion that there should be a provision if any voter does not find any of the contesting candidates suitable. In fact, the problem with the 49-O is that the identity of such voter is revealed since his details are maintained separately. Therefore, the ECI, while appearing in the Supreme Court a few years back on a Public Interest Litigation, had suggested that such an option should be made on the EVMs that any voter who does not want to vote for any contestant can record its negative vote without disclosing identity.
