This is because the tanks developed leakage, air went inside causing a supply of oxygen and hence death of methenogenic bacteria which survive only in the absence of oxygen. People were ignorant of this fact. Also, the gobar gas plants were installed on government subsidies. Hence, no body had spent on installation, and were not interested in repairs. I know of at least a couple of GGP which are still working, due to personal efforts to repair them. One of them is a big plant, in BAIF, Uralikanchan, which is functional for past 30 years. Reason? Scientists are associated with its functioning. It is taken for regular maintenance and repairs. And supplies gas by a gas line to near by houses. Now coming to Biogas plant. It is the waste management programme as I look at it. We should not look at it as an energy generating scheme. That, as I said is bonus. The points to give importance are: (1) It digests the bio-degradable waste very effectively. It can be installed at a place near to the collection place. It is hygienic. And, keeps the city clean. In addition, it gives a very high quality fertiliser. If all the waste is digested in this manner, we can solve a lot of fertiliser problem. (2) It is cost effective. Installation cost for a five ton plant is about 30 lakh. But, the running cost will be around 20 thousand per month. This will be far less than the cost required for transporting the waste. (3) Crucial part is not about construction of the biogas plants, but about their running and maintenance. We have to have staff trained to run and maintain the plants. ( 4) I am happy to tell you that such plant are running for a number of years now. If you visit Maharashtra, you are welcome to call on me, I will show you a couple of long time operational plants. (5) We are now moving in to an era where we use technologies effectively for the betterment of the society. That is why we want specialists in all the fields participating in active politics. Otherwise, a country having highest calibre professionals successful all over the world would be run in a totally non professional manner Let us work together to make our dream true. Now about the bonus part. The fertiliser not only replenishes the micro nutrients required by the soil. It provides biomass required for the survival of the life under the earth, which provides a lot more nutrients to the soil compared to what the chemical fertilisers can give. And what more, it provides the organisms themselves to the soil for its replenishment. We may say, the soil gets life. This is the short story.
