Happy Raksha Bandhan
Traditional Significance
The Raksha Bandhan festival is celebrated to commemorate the everlasting bond
between brothers and sisters. Though it is marked by a simple ceremony, in
which
a woman ties a Rakhi on her brother's wrist, but it has got a great
significance. The word Raksha signifies protection where as Bandhan means an
enduring bond of love. The brother, on his part, recognizes this special bond
and by extending his wrist forward, he in fact extends the hand of protection
over his sister.
Another significant and important part of the Rakhi-tying ceremony is the Aarti
ritual. This is done with a view to draw the blessings of God upon her brother.
The basic aim of all festivals and celebrations is to create a cordial and
amicable relationship between people. The same holds true for Raksha Bandhan.
The festival of Rakhi symbolizes togetherness, which is the essence of all
celebrations. Raksha Bandhan teaches us the values and charms of relationships.
The brother sister relationship is no where so worshiped as here in India. It
is
this affection and love that is celebrated on the Raksha Bandhan.
Rakhi has a rich Indian historical base. Many historically significant epics
are
related to the origin and the subsequent development of Raksha Bandhan. The
festival also finds a mention in most of the epics and its origin can be traced
to as far back as the Pouranik times including the Mahabharata.
When Alexander invaded India in 326 B.C., he was seriously injured & captured
by
King Porus. Having come to know about Rakhi, Alexander’s wife sends a Rakhi to
the King Porus, who in return releases her husband Alexander. That is how he
returns alive to Greece.
