Fedora 2.1.1 - A Secure, Powerful Open-Source Solution for Digital Repositories

The Fedora Project (http://www.fedora.info) is proud to announce the release of
version 2.1.1 of the Fedora open-source digital repository system. In addition
to the standard Fedora features built around web services, XML, and RDF, this
release introduces the new Fedora security architecture, the Fedora Service
Framework, significant performance improvement, and many other new features and
enhancements. Now, Fedora provides an even more powerful, flexible, and secure
foundation for a wide variety information management applications, including
institutional repositories, digital libraries, e-research, e-scholarship,
records management, digital archives, and educational software.

A major new feature of Fedora 2.1.1 is automated enforcement of access control
policies using XACML (eXtensible Access Control Markup Language). Both simple
and fine-grained policies can be written to permit or deny access to a Fedora
repository. Also, object-specific policies can be written to control access to
a particular object or its components (content or metadata items). Fedora 2.1.1
ships with a set of default repository-wide policies (which can be modified).
Additionally, any number of custom policies can be written and loaded. Fedora's
new security architecture provides SSL support, as well as configurable
authentication (via pluggable login modules for the Tomcat servlet container).
Fedora is pre-configured with a user/password file, and the option to multiplex
it with an LDAP directory. Other login modules can be easily added.

The Fedora Service Framework is introduced to better position Fedora as a
service-oriented architecture and to allow new services to be built around the
core repository service. While repository functionality can still be extended
with new modules, the intent is to keep the repository service focused on core
functions. Within the broader service framework, two new services are included
in this release: (1) a Directory Ingest service that accepts an archive of
files and ingests them into a repository as digital objects with hierarchical
relationships retained, and (2) a new Fedora OAI Provider service which is
highly configurable, supports sets, and enables harvesting of any type of
datastream or dissemination of Fedora objects.
Fedora 2.1.1 also includes a variety of enhancements and new utilities. To
support recovery of a damaged repository, the Repository Rebuilder is
introduced. This utility completely reconstitutes a Fedora repository
(including all databases and indices) by crawling XML source files for Fedora
digital objects that are stored on disk or restored from backup media.
Fedora 2.1.1 is released under the Educational Community License (ECL).
Complete details are in the 2.1.1 release notes.

The Fedora Project is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation through
September 2007. The Fedora Advisory Board has been established to work with the
Fedora Project directors to develop a long-term sustainability model beyond the
current funding period. The Fedora User Community has become very active, and
has already organized several user conferences in the United States, Europe,
and Australia. Several community-run working groups have been commissioned,
including Preservation, Workflow, Search, and Outreach.

Details are on the Fedora website (see: http://www.fedora.info/community/).
