DIGITAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM -- PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Digital Information Management Program (DIMP), located in the Library
Services Section of the State Library, strengthens the Library's mandate "to
facilitate public access to publications issued by State agencies" (G.S.
125-11.5). The DIMP extends traditional Library functions of collecting,
managing, and preserving printed state documents for public access to
include digitized and born digital state information and the development of
digital library collections. The DIMP provides guidance and education to
state government content creators (e.g., authors, webmasters) regarding
their role in managing digital state information for long-term public
access. DIMP staff networks internally within the State Library and State
Archives and externally with state agencies, national organizations, and
State Libraries/Archives throughout the country to develop policies,
standards, and best practices for digital library management and
preservation. DIMP research and development activities include developing,
testing, and implementing criteria for identifying and selecting digital
state content from websites, web harvesting tools, digital repository
systems, metadata schema, user-oriented web access interfaces for the
Library's digital collections, interoperability standards for digital asset
exchange between state agencies and the Library, and digital preservation
standards and methods.
