Thanks, Adam.  After I updated Bibdesk using the link you provided  
(http://bibdesk.demokratia.org/beta) everything worked fine.  I can  
now see the citations in addition to the group counts on the left pane!

I have a question though.  I only download new versions of Bibdesk  
when prompted by Bibdesk itself.  Do I need to change something in  
Bibdesk to ensure that I am downloading the correct updates?  I've  
never seen any setting in prefs to do that.

Yes, the problem did occur under other (even admin) accounts.

Not sure what APE is but I did install GCALDaemon http:// 
gcaldaemon.sourceforge.net/ I am not sure why it would effect the  
display in Bibdesk though.

I didn't even have this directory.

I did install a firmware update from Apple for my Mac Pro.   
Unfortunately I do not recall whether the problem began immediately  
after that or not.
