Or perhaps a small popup on the bottom border? This would allow a bit more efficient toggling of views, which would be helpful when-- for example--you have a lot of Skim notes. It also seems that there is some overlap between the "Template" menu item and the "Template style" menu item in the popout from "Preview Display." I wonder whether the "Template" item could be deleted, and possibly the "Template style" item below the menu divider could be replaced by the contents of its popout menu. That would reduce the menu tree one level and would also be efficient to use with a contextual popout or a fixed popup with one level.
