biblatex apparently does not add the proper \bibcite commands to  
the .aux file, because it does not use \bibcite commands. That's why  
it was not working. What was added in the last release is just a  
workaround, not a real fix. It's using the citations rather than the  
bibliography items, because biblatex does not add the latter to  
the .aux file.
