If you just want metadata linking publications to each other, you could add a
"Citation" field type:
http://bibdesk.sourceforge.net/manual/BibDesk%20Help_70.html
That field would be ignored by BibTeX or biblatex, and just allow you to keep
track of references without parent/child semantics and field inheritance.
