I don’t know how they are distinguished technically, but the Preferences 
settings in the current session are reset and at the same time the file 
edu.ucsd.cs.mmccrack.bibdesk.plist is also initialized (I checked the file 
explicitly).

Anyhow, the bug is frustrating (or amazing).
