As you note, it is working for standard fields. So it is indeed working.So it 
*is* working. But as you noted it does not work anymore in arbitrary custom 
fields. This is done for performance reasons, and moreover for general 
arbitrary fields auto completion can be more of a nuisance than a help. For 
instance, fields that generally have different values for different items have 
no use for completion. And we only know for standard fields whether it is 
useful or a nuisance. So it is a matter of balancing. 

BTW, if you have some particular fields where completion would be useful for 
you, you actually can set a hidden preference to add this fields for 
completion. See the Wiki for details on hidden preferences.
