If that were the case with my system, then it doesn't make sense that  
merely replacing the bulb stopped the majority of the flickering.  Of  
course, that means the remaining flicker is even more mysterious.   
What change could have been effected, by replacing the bulb, that  
reduced, but did not eliminate, the flicker?

I've had two 6 volt Dymotec systems, and they have always worked  
great.  I'm certain it's not my adjustment of the generator itself.   
And I use Schwalbe tires, with their little strip of patterned rubber  
for the dynamo.
