***** INTO THE CANYON This week I hiked to the bottom of the canyon next to the house and camped overnight. The topography map shows the river, the South Fork of the American River, only about a quarter of a mile distant, but there's a drop of elevation of 1000 feet and getting there requires a lot of zigzagging, plowing through underbrush and scooting down smooth, house-size granite boulders too steeply inclined to walk down.
