Hello,
I just learned that a student-initiated Green (free) Bike program hopes to start in La Crosse soon. They received a grant to purchase bikes and have many that will be fixed up from a recent police auction. One of the faculty advisors of the group said the University here is balking because of liability issues.
So, I am writing to you all in case you have contact people at other university- or municipality-run free bike programs that I could recommend to those on this campus who have issues.
I believe the plan is to place the bikes around town with stickers that have a number to call in case the bike needs repairs. The call will go to a clearing house that will assign a volunteer to take the bike to one of the local bike shops (apparently several have said they would help sponsor this program.)
If others have experience with logistics, possible problems and/or expansion to include training for middle school students (a thought about expanding this program if it gets going) please let me know.
I will forward any information I get to the faculty advisor and thank you in advance for any help.
