All -

This is a plea for anyoe who cares about good land use and
pedestrian/bike/transit friendly development to take a moment to emailor call
the entire City Council in opposition to the current proposal for Phase II of
the Hilldale redevelopment (aka - Whole Foods.)

There have been multiple editorials in the paper, and even one on WISC news
(Neil Heinen) saying that this is bad land use. The Madison Planning Commission
has TWICE voted it down by substantial margins because of it's suburban design
and surface parking. Yet the project could be approved over these objections at
Tuesday's Council meeting.

The concerns raised by the Commission and by neighbors of Hilldale include:

* the proposed building is one story and would replace several multistory
buildings
* a large surface parking lot is proposed, while the existing structure has
underground parking
* The immediate area already contains two grocery stores
* The proposed development is "suburban style" and too car focused
* The proposal is inconsistent with the stated desire of the developer to make
Hilldale pedestrian oriented

We need everyone to speak up, and please get a couple of friends or neighbors
to do so as well. Email [EMAIL PROTECTED] or call 266-4071 and voice your
opinion. These two methods will make sure the message goes to the entire
Council, not just your alder.

If you want to go farther, call or email the mayor's office. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
or 266-4611.

If you want to be a real hero, come speak at the Council meeting on Tuesday,
May 2, 6:30 PM at the City-County Bldg.
