I don't read Mike Ivey's comment, "I doubt this would have made the national 
news without that headline," as an admission he wrote the headline. Sounds like 
he was just acknowledging that the headline resonated, good or bad. As a former 
daily newspaper reporter, I can assure you the writers and columnists do not 
write the headlines. They suggest headlines, but it is the copy editors and/or 
page designers that determine the headlines based on what fits the available 
space.
