Dear Group,

Often our topic is about expanding the awareness of bikes in the broader community. Here is a sure fire way to do just that. Interweave the bicycle into popular, long running television dramas. Many promotions have consciously been expanded just that way. Remember that in the 1970s the country had a far different "first responder" medical method. Ambulances resembled hearses and medical attention generally waited until the emergency rooms. Then that long-running popular TV program, set in an L.A. fire station, made our current methods all the rage across that land. Ambulances became traveling emergency rooms with trained first responders. Today, the police dramas disseminate policing methods and other dramas increase demand for local duplication of all sorts of processes and equipment.

Assuming that there is an effective hierarchy of bike advocacy as we have been told on this list, they should work with the writers of new pilots and old dramas to weave in a bike theme in a conscious effort to promote, not equipment, but bike etiquette and highway awareness. Such advocacy groups could employ their own expert writer and lobby the "made for TV" production houses like the animal rights people do and every other single interest advocacy group. Such professional inclusion would trump nearly all top down declarations, confrontations, direct advertising, and government mandates on the subject. Possibly all this has been thought of and tried?

Eric
