See end of message for dates, times and locations on meetings. Yes, they are all out in the 'burbs.
As many of you know, there has been some disagreement about whether regional transportation should be funded, and if so how, especially among the car-first, suburban crowd. However you feel about the current proposal for certain modes - rail, bus, other modes - the first step to an economically sustainable, truly regional transportation system is to get state authority to form an RTA and funding authority. There is no possibility of getting federal aid without that step first. There is a very well-organized opposition to ANY regional transportation plan that includes the ability to levy taxes. This will stop any possibility of rail OR regional buses in their tracks if the opposition wins. While we can debate sales vs. property vs. income tax, one advantage of sales taxes to support transportation is that it captures revenue from those who use our roads, buses, bike paths, trains, etc, yet do not live in the county. *We need as many supporters **of transit** as possible to show up at the meetings listed below. Especially if you live or work outside Madison, or know anyone who does, please come to the meeting and/or forward this message to others. * The title of the meetings are "Community Briefing & Discussion: Finance and Governing for Possible Future Regional Transit Authority (RTA) in Dane County," so this is focused on funding and how the RTA might be governed. Monday, Feb. 23, 6:00-8:00 PM Middleton City Hall (Council Chambers) - 7426 Hubbard St, Middleton Thursday, Feb 26, 6:00-8:00 PM Stoughton City Hall (Fire Dept Training Rm) - 401 E Main St, Stoughton Monday, Mar 2, 6:00-8:00 PM De Forest Area Community & Senior Center (Community Rm) - 505 N Main St, De Forest If any of you would like further information, please feel free to contact me, or City of Madison staff Dave Trowbridge - [email protected].
