FYI, I sent this email to David Dryer last night. Also cc'd Arthur (for the
bike aspect) and Chuck Kamp (Transit Manager, because of the federal funding
of this lane as a transit "fixed guideway.")

 David -

I know we have discussed this many times, but the Bikies list has recently
been buzzing about the fact that there are now no lane restriction signs on
the Square. This has led to even MORE drivers in the right lane than have
been there in the past. (By the way, I have done a few surveys, and well
over 50% of the drivers in the right lane do NOT turn right at the next
corner, thereby violating the lane restriction.)

As I have mentioned many times before, I think the natural sight line when
driving around the Square is in line with the next traffic signal, not
upwards to an overhead sign. Having the lane restriction signs overhead
virtually guarantees that people won't see the signs, and therefore there
will be many people driving illegally in that lane.

This means that bicyclists, who should be on the left side of the restricted
lane, so that drivers can pass to the right and turn, will be tailgated by
confused drivers. It also means that our "fixed guideway" under FHWA funding
is full of other-than-transit vehicles.

I hope the missing overhead signs means that you have decided to replace
them with signs within the natural sightline of drivers - that is signs on
the poles with or near the traffic signals.

Thank you for any information you can give me. I'd like to be able to pass
on a timeline for sign replacement to people that ask.

Robbie
