Kristine makes good points. The podcast piece was actually more stereotypically-damaging to drivers (making them out to be sexist rednecks) than to cyclists, imho. We could get upset at it, or shake our heads and go on with our lives.

I also really liked Robbie's comments about law-breaking, although I don't share her beliefs about following the really dumb traffic laws as a cyclist. I drove yesterday on Monroe -- ever try to drive the speed limit there? I tried it, as an experiment and got way more ire from vehicles (passing on the right) than I've ever had on a bike ride. So we all (probably) break laws -- and prolly need to have a bit more patience with each other.

Bikies,
From what I know about WJJO's morning show, it is complete trash and not worthy of all this worry and angst. This is a sexist, racist, and apparently gay-bashing show. Just don't listen to it! We all know that Madison has both the educated biking crowd that believes in human rights and the white-trash types who have no respect for anything and would rather let their body and minds rot away. Why get so worked up about their stupidity and remedial "humor". This is liking asking Howard Stern for an apology to women.

I would say, just don't ever listen to the show. The people that would care about the apology, already understand.

Randy,

I can't speak for anyone else, but I would like to see WJJO make a formal retraction, apology, and commitment to atonement via some public service to the cycling community, the LGBT community, and the developmentally challenged in our community.

I don't think simply taking the podcast off the air does much. But making a public comment that shows that the station has learned from their mistake/lack of judgment might be a good place to start. We all make mistakes, some bigger than others, and since we can't go back in time to undo them, we have to decide where to go from here.

After first hearing the podcast I was initially completely outraged, and now I have decided that I don't really want to fuel the hatred that was the motivating force behind the original podcast piece.

That's my 2 cents, and because we cyclists and listeners are a diverse bunch you will no doubt still get lots of other opinions. Be open to them and try to make informed decisions from hereon out.

Best of luck,

India
