thanks for posting..this makes good sense..when I get to the stops (almost 
never run a red though, almost always weight, unless the 45 second rule 
happens) I always slow considerably, stop pedaling and stand on the 
petals...one, it shows drivers and peds nearby that I'm not just another one of 
"those damn scofflaw bikers", its A LOT safer for me than running it..because 
it's really not that rare to see a car blow off a stop sign and not even think 
of looking for a non car in the intersection, I'm also much more noticable to 
the cars because I'm "larger"....quite frankly, I feel as much at risk by my 
fellow cyclists NOT abiding by the rules in many places-more so than the cars, 
especially around campus and downtown...my wife had to have surgery after a 
crash because of a cyclist not following the rules...I've had several accidents 
as a result with luckly no signficant injuries but some pretty good damage to 
my bikes.
