Snohomish County-- north of Seattle/King County-- started up their Swift "bus rapid transit" system today.

What makes it rapid transit instead of just a bus line?

Frequency, pay-before-you-board, near at-grade boarding, priority signals, a simplified DIY system for wheelchair securement-- and *in-bus* bike racks with a dedicated entry, seen at about 2:00 in the six-minute video intro on the Seattle Transit Blog at

 http://seattletransitblog.com/2009/11/29/swift-opening-day-is-here/

Haven't ever seen an in-bus bike rack before.

BTW, Seattle's light rail-- bicycles allowed on board-- opens its extension to SeaTac airport in three weeks, on 19 December.
