Apparently the Middleton City Council is still charging ahead with plans for a North Mendota Parkway (Resolution 2010-13). And of course Westport is hot for it too. Why?
One possibility: so that plans are ready if/when more Highway stimulus dollars become available. Remember the beginning of last year? Shovel ready, baby!!! All of a sudden projects that had been gathering dust for YEARS were shifted into high gear. This is how Keynesians think - throw money at ANYTHING. The money men who pull the strings in Washington could care less about the ecological impacts or our pathological addiction to sitting on our asses and driving everywhere: they just want dirt getting moved.and guys getting paid. Another possibility: Middleton and Westport hope to twist the arms of the developers so they pay for some of the Parkway. Hey pal, if you can raise enough bread to bulldoze 900 acres, you can cough up some dough for a "needed" arterial! Rest assured that Middleton would not be wasting time with this if they didn't think it had a decent chance of moving forward. I keep thinking we're fighting a losing battle trying to stop this stuff via government. We (Amerkans) have driven ourselves into an awful corner with the Growth Economy - in order to stave off destabilizing levels of employment our government does everything it can to expand consumption (i.e. the "velocity of money") year after year. It's an incredible quagmire, and it looks like we human beings may be too stupid to avoid a horrific collision with the biophysical limitations of Earth. Meanwhile pray for sky-high oil prices - history has shown that pain at the pump will restrain the appetites of a people incapable of enlightened self-restraint. Hans Noeldner
