About 10 or more of us gathered yesterday at the Mason Lounge to continue our discussion & finalize some plans for Madison Bike Winter. Here's what we came up with:
-First event will be Great Dane to Great Dane ride on Wed, 12/15. People will gather around 5:30 at the downtown location & bike to Hilldale for a beverage. Then, bike back downtown for beverage & food. Riders will also be able to join the group along the way or meet up at Hilldale. -Decided to use the City's website, www.cityofmadison.com, & their declaration of a "snow emergency" as our indication to go for Snow Bike Rides, random locations around & distance will be weather permitting. We decided that our meeting point for these rides would be in front of the Madison City/County Building on MLK, 6 PM. Will have to rely on blasting a message out, using Facebook, posters, & word-of-mouth to spread the info on our snow bike rides. Watch & listen for snow emergencies! -Santa Cycle Rampage, where riders would be strongly encouraged to be in festive costumes, needs to have a date. We discussed & did not finalize plans for this but can hand out flyers for our event at the Santa Con on Sat, 12/4. Tentatively planned for possibly 12/17 or 12/18. Route also TBD but either stay downtown or bike out to Hilldale to catch the X-mas shoppers. -Our idea of a Winter Fashion Show is also still "in the works" but we discussed having it sooner than later, so watch for more information hopefully soon on this. A member, Mindy, is with the Hoofers & is checking to see if we could get space at the Union & a possible tentative date of 12/8 was thrown out as a possibility. We'll need participants! -Participate in Bombay's Freezaroo 30 on Sun, 11/28. Garner Park 10:00 AM, L-30, S-15 Moderately Hilly. This late-season chiller has some warming hills, plus a coffee stop in Cross Plains, the halfway point on this 30 mile ride. Contact Sam Gabelt [email protected] 608-233-0623 -Continue to have informal "meet-ups" for Madison Bike Winter on the 3rd Wed of every mo during the winter mos, except for Dec due to the Dane to Dane ride. These will continue to be at the Mason Lounge on Park St & will be an opportunity for people to just get together & chat about winter cycling, both those currently riding in the winter & those who are curious. -The next Full Moon bike ride will probably be on Mon, 12/20, since the full moon will be early 12/21. The FBC will post a "Travesty" to take place for Dec & they usually start between 8:30 PM & 9 PM, from the corner of E Main & Livingston. Find "FBC" group on Facebook. -Bike to Work Day needs more planning but tentatively planned for Feb. Other discussion items & ideas: -Ride out to the Polar Plunge -See if Bombay will be doing a New Year ride -Start a Google group for corresponding & for discussions -Host a Polka Ride in Madison, possibly from Essen Haus -Seek more publicity, possibly Silent Sports -Get those little cards from DOT on the rules/laws of the road -Have a table at SWAP -Participate in the Madison Winter Fest's Cyclo-Frost CX race -Bike ride(s) on the lake(s) -DIY classes, such as make your own studded tires, fairing, knickers, etc. -Friendly competition to see who bike commutes the most during the winter mos, w/an award ceremony at the end of season -Bike ride on the coldest day of the year...brrrr!!!! Well, that's it for now folks. A lot to absorb & a lot to potentially do. Let me know if you have other ideas &/or would like to help w/any of the above listed items. Sounds like we should be having a fun Bike Winter season! Aaron
