In addition to wide roads being inherently more dangerous, so too are
one way streets. In my Tenney Lapham neighborhood, the Gorham/E.
Johnson pairs are both narrow streets with trees and everything you want
to calm traffic. However, because they are one way, there are no
oncoming cars to make drivers more alert, and so they push on the gas,
neighborhood kids and pets be damned. Madison really needs to rethink
all these darn one way streets on the Isthmus. My Tenney Lapham
neighbhorhood plan calls for these streets to return to two-way traffic
to restore our neighborhood these two drag strips have destroyed. I
personally never see cars barreling down Willy Street at 40 MPH simply
because oncoming traffic and parked cars have a calming effect.
