Wondering whether anyone has had anything like the following happen to them?

Yesterday when I was riding my bike I noticed that something was rubbing the
front wheel. Thought it might be a stick or piece of weed - I'd just ridden
thru some grass. While riding I reached down to tap on the fender to see if
I could shake whatever it was loose. The next thing I knew I had gone
head-first over the handlebars and was lying on the road. In the process I
knocked off one of those handlebar extension things with my leg. Turns out
the fender had jammed into the wheel and turned into a very effective brake.
Fortunately there didn't appear to be any other damage to the bicycle. I
removed the crumpled part of the fender and rode home without further
incident.

In retrospect I can see that flexing the fender while riding was stupid of
me. HOWEVER, fenders often shake and rattle a bit, and in normal use the
wire stays sometimes get bent enough so that the fender or bracket rubs the
tire. So, IN PRINCIPLE the same thing could happen again without stupidity
on the part of the rider.
