The Social Justice Center Celebrates 13 Years and presents the 2013 Social
Justice Awards.

It remains a critical time for grassroots progressive advocacy in Madison,
Dane County and statewide. In this ongoing era of budget cuts and financial
uncertainties, the supportive collaboration between established non-profits
and non-profits just getting started is essential. For 13 years, the Social
Justice Center has continued to be a place to meet, hatch creative ideas,
develop action plans, assemble volunteers and make a difference in Madison
and Wisconsin - together.

Many of this happens in the Nan Cheney Community Room.  The increased usage
of this community meeting space along with the increased need for technical
support for these groups, combine to fulfill Nan Cheney’s vision for the
Community Room and the Social Justice Center.

You’re invited to join in the festivities to mark our 13th anniversary:
Friday, May 31st at the Badger Bowl Cabin Lodge Room at 5:30 PM. We will be
celebrating our 13 years of social justice and grassroots advocacy by
honoring those who have been very active in promoting social justice causes
in our community.
Barbara Vedder will receive the 2013 Social Justice Legacy Award, and
Philip Ejercito will be posthumously awarded the 2013 Social Justice
Visionary Award.

The Social Justice Center now houses five non-profit organizations:
·     Dane County Timebank
·     Madison Community Cooperative
·     Tenant Resource Center
·     Today Not Tomorrow, Inc.
·     WYOU Community Television
Together, they collectively share responsibility for the Center’s
governance, administration, and maintenance, allowing us to work together
on different fronts, but with a common cause—social change.

As collective owners of the building, we are able to provide office space
at minimal cost for fledgling social justice and progressive groups in our
lower level Social Justice Incubator.  The SJC Incubator provides these
small organizations with office space and furniture, as well as shared use
of a networked copier/printer/fax and internet access at a very affordable
rate.

The current Incubator tenants are:
the Ceiba Foundation for Tropical Conservation, the East Isthmus
Neighborhood Planning Council, Madison Hours, Operation Welcome Home,
Progressive Dane, and 5-Stones/MAC-Madison Alliance Church.

Additionally, social justice art by local artists and photographers find a
home in the Jackie Macaulay Gallery, which provides exhibit space for both
emerging and established artists. This summer we have been asked to house
the unique gallery showing of photos of the Overpass Light Brigade.
