The Social Justice Center Celebrates 13 Years and presents the 2013 Social Justice Awards.
It remains a critical time for grassroots progressive advocacy in Madison, Dane County and statewide. In this ongoing era of budget cuts and financial uncertainties, the supportive collaboration between established non-profits and non-profits just getting started is essential. For 13 years, the Social Justice Center has continued to be a place to meet, hatch creative ideas, develop action plans, assemble volunteers and make a difference in Madison and Wisconsin - together. Many of this happens in the Nan Cheney Community Room. The increased usage of this community meeting space along with the increased need for technical support for these groups, combine to fulfill Nan Cheney’s vision for the Community Room and the Social Justice Center. You’re invited to join in the festivities to mark our 13th anniversary: Friday, May 31st at the Badger Bowl Cabin Lodge Room at 5:30 PM. We will be celebrating our 13 years of social justice and grassroots advocacy by honoring those who have been very active in promoting social justice causes in our community. Barbara Vedder will receive the 2013 Social Justice Legacy Award, and Philip Ejercito will be posthumously awarded the 2013 Social Justice Visionary Award. Your sponsorship of the 13th Anniversary would be very significant. Please consider a generous sponsorship donation to mark this auspicious occasion. Your sponsorship gift - be it $50, $100, $250 or $1,000—will help grow and support the Social Justice Center as we continue in our second decade of activism! The Social Justice Center now houses five non-profit organizations: · Dane County Timebank · Madison Community Cooperative · Tenant Resource Center · Today Not Tomorrow, Inc. · WYOU Community Television Together, they collectively share responsibility for the Center’s governance, administration, and maintenance, allowing us to work together on different fronts, but with a common cause—social change. As collective owners of the building, we are able to provide office space at minimal cost for fledgling social justice and progressive groups in our lower level Social Justice Incubator. The SJC Incubator provides these small organizations with office space and furniture, as well as shared use of a networked copier/printer/fax and internet access at a very affordable rate. The current Incubator tenants are: the Ceiba Foundation for Tropical Conservation, the East Isthmus Neighborhood Planning Council, Madison Hours, Operation Welcome Home, Progressive Dane, and 5-Stones/MAC-Madison Alliance Church. Additionally, social justice art by local artists and photographers find a home in the Jackie Macaulay Gallery, which provides exhibit space for both emerging and established artists. This summer we have been asked to house the unique gallery showing of photos of the Overpass Light Brigade. Please consider a generous tax-deductible sponsorship of the Social Justice Center’s 13th Anniversary Celebration. To have your name listed as a sponsor in the celebration program booklet, please return your pledge by Tuesday, May 28th . Your gift also includes admittance to our 13th Birthday Celebration. Thank you for your support. We hope to see you – and a friend – at our birthday celebration honoring Barbara Vedder and honoring Philip Ejercito posthumously, on Friday, May 31st at Badger Bowl Cabin Lodge, 506 E Badger Rd, Madison. Frankly, I have yet to engage in a direct action campaign that was "well timed" in the view of those who have not suffered unduly from the disease of segregation. For years now I have heard the word "Wait!" It rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity. This "Wait" has almost always meant "Never." We must come to see, with one of our distinguished jurists, that "justice too long delayed is justice denied." - Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Dr. Martin Luther King. If life were a thing money could buy, the rich would live and poor would die. - Widespread Panic (Arleen) *Unless* someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not. - Dr. Seuss
