Here is an article that covers many of the issues I have considered over the years. Car drivers will be very vocal if they can't park somewhere, and shop owners obsess over losing customers because of insufficient [car] parking.
http://www.bostonglobe.com/lifestyle/health-wellness/2013/07/07/new-kind-problem-where-park-your-bike/830w8eN7YVDZDublGfwVhL/story.html And a couple of comments give suggestions how to fix the problem - really good ones, not all snark. They estimate that one car parking spot will fit 14 bikes in a corral. I think that might be a bit high, but even 10 bikes/car spot would solve a lot of problems. And getting long-term bike parkers such as employees and residents to park in secure off-street spots would really help free up spots on the street for customers of shops, restaurants, and bars. Just like what parking meters do - make sure there is turnover and more convenient spots for those quick stops.
