This video popped up a year ago. It sounds a lot more revolutionary (no
pun intended) than it really is. Please let me make a couple of
observations:
1. All objects want to move in a straight line - and this is related to
mass, acceleration and friction. High schoolers learn that in their
first exposure to physics.
2. The other necessary factor is self correcting steering. That's no
surprise. Waterford co-founder Marc Muller experimented with this back
in the 80's and found that even a bike with massively negative trail
would stay balanced as long as the steering can self-correct. Only by
locking the steerer can you prevent a rolling bike from staying stable.
3. He added that stability is affected by weight distribution. Again,
that should be pretty obvious.
4. Even he admitted that trail does have an impact on handling. It's
just not a necessary impact. - it's just not the only impact.
His beef was with the reseacher Jones, who said that trail was
necessary, and it he showed us that indeed it is not.
For that, he deserves a big, "Thanks for sharing!"
This article claims that the physics of riding a bicycle is not
understood. http://www.newstatesman.com/2013/07/mysteries-bicycle That
can't be right!
